Wasit opens concrete bridge linking Ahrar to Kut, replacing aging floating crossing
KUT — Wasit’s local government on Thursday inaugurated the Ahrar Concrete Bridge linking Ahrar district with the city center of Kut, ending decades of reliance on an aging floating bridge that required repeated repairs.
Gov. Hadi Majid al-Hamashi said the project was part of the governorate development program and was awarded in 2020 to Anwar Souri Contracting Company.
He said completion was delayed by the company’s commitments to the Gulf Cup in Basra and the death of the company’s owner, engineer Abdullah Owaiz al-Jubouri, but added that the bridge was finished in full compliance with technical specifications.
The bridge is 665 meters long, with a total length of 1,585 meters including approaches from both sides. It has 19 spans and is 9.5 meters wide, with 2.5-meter pedestrian walkways and lighting extending 1,050 meters.
