Probe opened into viral video of truck driver attempting self-immolation after fine
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Interior Ministry said Wednesday it had opened an investigation into a viral video appearing to show a truck driver attempting to set himself on fire after receiving a fine at the Saqlawiyah weigh station in Anbar governorate.
The ministry said all employees at the weigh station had been suspended pending the investigation “to determine whether there was any negligence or violation in the procedures that should have been followed.” A specialized investigative committee has been formed to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
The ministry described the incident as “regrettable and painful” and said it represented “an exceptional case,” stressing its commitment to “humane and lawful treatment with all citizens in a manner consistent with respecting human dignity and enforcing the law.” It called on citizens facing psychological pressure or emergency circumstances to seek assistance from relevant authorities.
The ministry affirmed to those struggling that support is available through local health centers and hospitals across Iraq.
