Third MP from the June sweep jailed for seven years

BAGHDAD — The Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court has sentenced sitting lawmaker Mohammed Farman Shaher Salman al-Jubouri to seven years for illicit enrichment, the third of the figures named by state media in June’s Green Zone operation to be convicted, the Federal Commission of Integrity said.

The court found he had gained 11.796 billion dinars and $1.729 million illicitly, about $10.7 million in total at the official rate. He was ordered to return it and fined the same amount again, 28.157 billion dinars combined. He also received three years for concealment, with the seven-year term applied, and the seizure of his movable and immovable assets was upheld.

State media said in June that 47 lawmakers and officials had been detained in an operation based on information attributed to detained former Deputy Oil Minister Adnan al-Jumaili, and published 15 names. Bahaa al-Nouri was sentenced on Sept. 16 and Alia Nassif Jassim on Sept. 23, alongside Ashwaq Salim Hassan, each to seven years. Nassif’s combined repayment and fine came to more than 61 billion dinars.

Deputy Oil Minister Ali Maarij al-Bahadli and former lawmaker Talal al-Zobaie were each jailed for seven years in August. Sitting MP Mohammed Nasser Dali al-Karbouli received two years in July for soliciting a $50,000 bribe, and MP Hasnain Qasim Mohammed al-Khafaji two years for blackmail involving a demand for $500,000 and a stake in a residential project.
