For May and June

KRG urges federal government to pay salaries of security forces

ERBIL – The Kurdistan Regional Government’ Council of Ministers issued a statement on Wednesday urging the federal government to promptly disburse salaries for the Peshmerga and Asayish for the months of May and June. Despite having submitted the salary lists to a joint committee of the KRG and federal finance auditing bureaus, the salaries remain unpaid.

The KRG emphasized it has “fulfilled its obligations and that it is the federal government’s duty to allocate the rightful shares to the Kurdistan Region, similar to other regions in Iraq,” to ensure salary payments are made.

The Council also called on Baghdad to release funds allocated for other entitlements of the Kurdistan Region from the 2024 Iraqi budget, including operational, investment, and development projects. To date, no portion of these funds has been transferred to the region.

The statement noted, “Since the beginning of 2024, the Kurdistan Region has sent its share of the federal revenues from its non-oil incomes to the Federal Ministry of Finance. Additionally, monthly salary lists and detailed reports on the region’s revenues and expenditures of all the ministries have been transparently submitted to the federal finance ministry.”

Since March 2023, the KRG has been unable to provide salaries for its civil servants and security forces after an International Chamber of Commerce ruling halted KRG oil exports, the region’s main revenue source. Despite ongoing negotiations, Baghdad and the KRG have yet to agree on a mechanism to regularly disburse the KRG’s salary and budget share.
