Al-Sudani inspects gas pipeline project to boost power at Bismayah plant

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani visited a key pipeline construction site Thursday as part of efforts to boost electricity production at the Bismayah Power Station, according to official statements.

The 43-kilometer pipeline will carry up to 800 million standard cubic feet of dry gas per day from the Mahmudiya district to the plant, one of Iraq’s largest.

Al-Sudani was described as “closely following the fieldwork” during his visit, the prime minister’s media office said, adding the project is expected to enhance national power output.

Deputy Prime Minister for Energy and Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani joined the visit and praised the technical scope of the project. The Oil Ministry noted the pipeline’s 42-inch diameter and said it will “help meet citizens’ electricity needs and stabilize the national grid.”

“The teams are working day and night to complete the project within the 120-day deadline,” Abdul Ghani said.

Ali Ward Hammoud, general manager of the Oil Projects Company, said work had begun on pipeline crossings and that construction remained on schedule.

The Bismayah Combined Cycle Power Plant, located about 25 kilometers southeast of Baghdad, is operated by Mass Group Holding under a 20-year build-own-operate contract with the Ministry of Electricity.
