Groups raise over 22 million dinars

Garmiyan organizations launch fundraising campaign for flood victims

GARMIYAN — Fourteen organizations in the Garmiyan region have raised nearly 22 million Iraqi dinars ($16,755 USD) in a five-day campaign to support victims of recent flooding.

Heavy rainfall on Feb. 15 caused damage to approximately 220 households in the Garmiyan area, with no reported casualties.

The head of Shokh Organization, Haifa Majid, said her group’s campaign differed from others by actively soliciting donations from businesses, local figures, and government institutions within Garmiyan administration. In total, the groups collected 21.95 million dinars for victims.

“We plan to visit affected families, particularly those in need, and distribute the funds based on the severity of their losses,” Majid said.

Prior to the fundraising effort, Beston Zhazhlayi, Director of Migration, Refugees, and Crisis Response in Garmiyan, estimated the total flood damage at approximately 2.2 billion dinars ($1.68 million USD).

Damage recorded as a result of the flooding included the loss of homes, livestock, and vehicles, as well as destruction of water mains, roads, irrigation projects, electricity infrastructure, and more.
