Abandoned newborn in stable condition after being found near Balad water project

SALAH AL-DIN — A newborn baby was discovered abandoned near a water project in the Ishaqi subdistrict of Balad on Saturday, prompting security forces to intervene and transfer the infant to Balad General Hospital, local officials said.

Hamza Ali, media official for the Balad district administration, told 964media that security forces responded after a passerby found the baby. “security personnel in the Ishaqi subdistrict were informed about the presence of a newborn, apparently abandoned, and the child was immediately transferred to Balad General Hospital,” he said.

Ali added that the spot where the child was left has no surveillance cameras, and authorities have yet to identify who left the baby. “So far, there’s no information about who abandoned the infant,” he said.

Medical staff confirmed the newborn is in stable condition. “The child has been examined and has no physical injuries. Doctors are monitoring the situation,” Ali said. He noted that several families have shown interest in adopting the infant, but no legal steps have been taken. “This is the first time such an incident has occurred in the area,” he said.

On Feb. 22, 2025, a four-day-old infant was found at a landfill in the Qarahanjiri subdistrict and taken to Kirkuk Children’s Hospital, where the child remains in stable condition.
