KRG education ministry offers cash reward for most avid readers
ERBIL – In a move to promote literacy and reading rates, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Education, in partnership with UNICEF, has launched a novel digital library platform and training program aimed at bolstering reading habits among teachers and students.
During a press conference held today, Minister Alan Hama Saeed unveiled the initiative, which includes a unique incentive for teachers: an annual financial reward of five million Iraqi dinars (~$3300) for the most avid readers.
The platform is designed to record the number of pages and time each teacher spends reading. The educator with the highest book count each year will be eligible for the five million dinar prize, provided they submit and have a brief approved by a designated committee, highlighting the insights and knowledge gained from their reading.
Additionally, the Ministry has allocated rewards of four million and three million dinars for the second and third most prolific teacher readers, respectively. An innovative feature of the platform is the “Motivating Teacher” component, enabling students to acknowledge teachers who have significantly encouraged their reading habits. Teachers leading in this category will be recognized with material awards, distributed across first to third places.
To further instill a reading culture, schools will host ceremonies to celebrate students who top the reading charts on the platform. Minister Saeed emphasized the broader educational objectives of the initiative, stating, “The platform is poised to continually nurture scientific curiosity, with a fundamental aim of enhancing education, learning, and the broad development of our skills and capabilities.”
