Fatal crash on steep road claims life of 24-year-old woman in Zakho
ZAKHO — A 24-year-old woman, Taban Chiya Shafiq, lost her life in a car incident on Tuesday evening, on the road connecting Zakho to the city center, Duhok governorate.
Bekas Abdulaziz, head of Zakho’s traffic department, told 964media, “The section of the road where the incident occurred is steep and causes high speeds, which likely made it difficult for the woman to maintain control of her vehicle.”
According to Amir Ali, a spokesperson for Zakho’s Health Directorate, the woman was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. “She had already succumbed to her injuries by the time she was brought in. The body is now at Zakho’s forensic medical center,” Ali stated.
This marks the first fatal traffic incident in the Zakho Autonomous Administration in 2025.
Traffic incidents remain a major concern across the country. On Jan. 6, a gas tanker overturned and collided with a vehicle near the village of Qoja Balbas on the Makhmour road, south of Erbil, killing the tanker driver and injuring four others.
On Jan. 6, a taxi collided with a tractor on the Halabja-Sirwan Main Road, resulting in four fatalities and leaving two others injured.
