A story of devotion to calligraphy

Salih Mohammed Amin’s quest to hand write the Qur’an

KALAR, January 16 — Salih Mohammed Amin is on a mission to hand write the Qur’an. The 73-year-old from Kalar district in Sulaymaniyah has nurtured a lifelong passion for calligraphy since childhood, particularly in the art of copying and transcribing portions of Islam’s holy book.

“It feels better when you read it written by your own hands,” he said.

Determined to rewrite the entire Qur’an, Salih hopes to finish the project in eight months. So far he has committed to writing three pages every day.
