Suspected British era tower

Structure emerges from Sirwan river due to flooding

GARMIYAN — An structure believed to be nearly 100 years old has surfaced in the Sirwan River in Sulaymaniyah’s Garmiyan area following recent flooding.

On May 17, a structure resembling an English-era guard tower emerged due to the floodwaters.

Salah Mohammed, the director of Garmiyan’s antiquities and heritage, told 964media, “The artifact is not very ancient. Based on the bricks used in its construction, it dates back to the English period, meaning the early 20th century, as we have previously seen such bricks used by the English in constructing houses in this area.”

According to Mohammed, the local population had not previously seen the structure, which was located in an agricultural zone.

“Investigations are ongoing. Due to the flooding, only its surroundings are visible, and the artifact itself has not suffered any damage,” Mohammed added.
