Man drowns in Choman district river as search for son continues
CHOMAN — A father and son from Erbil went missing after falling into a river near Galala in the Choman district, officials said. The father’s body was recovered, but the son remains missing, said Ahmad Barzan Aliko, district administrator of Choman.
The incident occurred when the son, identified as Ayhan, fell into the river and his father, Soran, jumped in to save him. Both are residents of the Newroz neighborhood in the Baharka area of Erbil.
Ahmad Barzan Ali, qaymaqam of the Choman district, told 964media that search teams have been deployed along the length of the river. Although the child’s body was reportedly seen 10 kilometers from the original site, officials have no confirmed this.
In separate incidents across the Kurdistan Region last month, several other drowning cases were reported. A 15-year-old boy drowned while swimming in Chamrge village, Erbil. His body was recovered by Khabat district’s underwater rescue teams, according to Erbil Civil Defense.
In the Taqtaq area, a man drowned at Mahnaz Park. Colonel Goran Ahmed Smaqay, director of Civil Defense in Koya, confirmed the incident.
A 20-year-old man also drowned in the Sirwan River in Sulaymaniyah’s Kalar district.
