Ceasefire lull punctured as drone attacks hit Sulaymaniyah, Koya and Soran
SULAYMANIYAH — Drone attacks targeted multiple locations across the Kurdistan Region on Tuesday, including areas in Sulaymaniyah, Koya and Soran, following several days of calm after the U.S.-Iran ceasefire.
In Sulaymaniyah governorate, a drone strike hit Surdash camp near the Dukan district, which hosts an Iranian Kurdish opposition group. Local officials said the attack caused material damage and left several people injured. Amjad Hussein Panahi, a representative of Komala, said in a statement that “two people were injured” in the strike.
A source from the Kurdistan Revolutionary Workers’ group said the camp in Surdash was targeted Tuesday evening by a drone.
In Koya, a separate drone attack targeted the Azadi camp of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran, though no casualties or damage were reported.
The Kurdistan Region’s counterterrorism service said two bomb-laden drones launched from Iran toward Erbil governorate were intercepted and shot down by fighter jets at 17:04 on Tuesday. The statement added that no casualties or damage were recorded.
The attacks come days after a pause in hostilities following a U.S.-Iran ceasefire, which had raised expectations of stability. However, similar incidents were reported on April 10, when multiple drone attacks targeted locations across the Kurdistan Region despite the ceasefire. Authorities said at the time the drones were intercepted and emphasized that “the Kurdistan Region has not been and will not be part of war and tensions.”
The Kurdistan Region experienced more than 500 attacks during the recent five-week conflict, including missile and drone strikes on military and civilian sites.
