Baghdad food inspection campaign targets expired products, faulty scales

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Central Service for Standardization and Quality Control launched an inspection campaign in western Baghdad on Thursday, targeting food expiration dates, storage conditions and the accuracy of weighing devices in markets and shops.

The campaign was carried out in cooperation with the Interior Ministry’s Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, the National Security Service, and the health and commercial oversight departments of the Health and Trade ministries. Inspectors verified compliance with Iraqi standards and checked products for suitability for human consumption, while also recording observations on weighing device calibration and the distribution of cooling equipment in storage facilities and sales outlets.

The service said the campaign is part of a broader strategy to intensify market inspections and protect public health. The Trade Ministry said in March it was implementing measures to limit price manipulation, monitor hoarding and prevent unjustified price increases while ensuring sufficient quantities of essential food items reach local markets.
