Iraq thanks Iran for facilitating oil tanker transit through Hormuz
BAGHDAD — Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met Iran’s ambassador to Iraq, Mohammad Kazem al-Sadeq, on Sunday, thanking Tehran for facilitating the passage of Iraqi oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz and stressing the importance of continuing the arrangement.
Hussein “thanked Iran for facilitating the passage of Iraqi oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz,” the Foreign Ministry said, with both sides discussing mechanisms to strengthen cooperation and ensure the commitment continues. Hussein also reiterated Iraq’s call for an end to the regional conflict, stressing “the need to reject war and end it” and emphasizing dialogue and negotiations as the path forward.
The Iranian ambassador outlined Tehran’s position on recent developments, while Hussein said the current phase requires “an approach based on open and rational dialogue” to enhance regional cooperation and contribute to shared stability.
The meeting follows significant developments on the Hormuz front. On April 4, Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya joint military command said Iraq would be exempt from any restrictions on transit through the waterway. A day later, shipping data showed an oil tanker carrying Iraqi crude passing through the strait near the Iranian coast after loading about 1 million barrels of Basrah Heavy crude, bound for Malaysia.
