Three injured in Basra crash caused by speeding

BASRA — A vehicle overturned Sunday on the road linking Umm Qasr and Khor Al-Zubair after the driver lost control at high speed, injuring three people, a security source told 964media.

The victims sustained head and chest injuries and were transferred to Zubair General Hospital for treatment. Some were reported in critical condition, though no fatalities occurred.

Preliminary investigations found speeding caused the driver to lose control and veer off the road. “Responsibility for the crash lies entirely with the driver,” the source said, urging motorists to follow speed limits and traffic regulations to protect themselves and others.

In June, the Ministry of Planning reported a 10% decline in traffic fatalities in 2024 compared with the previous year. It recorded 11,763 traffic incidents nationwide, excluding the Kurdistan Region. Of these, 2,103 were fatal, resulting in 2,719 deaths — down from 3,019 in 2023. Men accounted for about 82% of victims, with 2,235 deaths.
