Van crash in Diwaniya leaves students, driver seriously injured

DIWANIYA — A van carrying university students from Ghammas to Najaf overturned Wednesday morning in the Al-Asiyah area on the outskirts of Ghammas, seriously injuring all nine students and the driver.

Eyewitnesses said the vehicle lost control on wet roads, veered off course and flipped onto its side. Local residents rushed eight of the injured students to Al-Manathira Hospital, about 30 kilometers from the scene. Authorities confirmed that those students are now in stable condition.

The ninth student and the driver, both in critical condition, were transferred to Al-Sadr Hospital in Najaf, where they remain in serious condition.

This accident follows similar incidents earlier this year. In February, a crash on the Al-Majar–Al-Qala’a Al-Salih Road in Maysan governorate killed one university student and injured 13 others. That same month, a school bus collision on Erbil’s Lawan Street killed one student and injured 15, involving a bus carrying 18 students and a passenger car also transporting students.
