Iraqi parliament to host PM Al-Sudani today
BAGHDAD — The Iraqi Parliament will host Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani on Wednesday to discuss his government’s policies, responses to ongoing regional developments, and progress on key development initiatives, according to a statement from his media office.
While the statement does not specifically mention it, the session comes in the wake of recent events in Syria, which have heightened regional tensions. These events have prompted concerns over border stability and counter-terrorism efforts on Iraqi side.
In late November 2024, Syrian armed groups, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, launched a significant offensive, capturing key territories including the city of Aleppo. This advance marked a substantial setback for President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which has been supported by Russian airstrikes and Iranian-backed armed groups.
Statement from PM Al-Sudani’s media office:
The Council of Representatives will host Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani today, Wednesday, at his request, to discuss the government’s policies and the measures taken to address the ongoing challenges and regional developments following the events of October 7, 2023.
The session will also focus on the priorities and key aspects of the government program, review the progress made to date, and discuss the essential legislation necessary to fulfill the objectives of the development plans.
