Poisoning
Stray dogs in Kirkuk’s Altun Kupri face dire measures amid local concerns
ALTUN KUPRI – Stray dogs in Kirkuk’s Altun Kupri subdistrict have faced severe measures, including poisoning, as local authorities respond to residents’ concerns about safety. With no dedicated shelters available, the dogs have limited options, raising concerns over their treatment.
Although the number of stray dogs has decreased compared to a month ago, some still remain, causing continued anxiety in the community.
Imad Karam, a resident of Altun Kupri, expressed his concerns to 964media, stating that the presence of stray dogs has instilled fear in him and his children. “We are afraid to leave our homes because the dogs are attacking us,” he said, recounting an incident earlier this month when a child was attacked by several dogs. “We quickly managed to rescue the child,” he added.
While some residents support stricter measures for their safety, the situation has also highlighted the plight of the dogs, which appear to be roaming in search of food and safety, with no shelter or safe space available.
Muhammad Najib Majid, the head of the Altun Kupri subdistrict municipality, told 964media that stray dogs are not being gathered in a specific place by a committee of municipal workers but are instead being poisoned. “Due to the lack of a shelter or a designated area for gathering them, the operation began by using poison,” Majid explained.
Currently, only a few stray dogs remain in the subdistrict center, and efforts by authorities continue. This situation raises questions about whether more humane alternatives could be considered to ensure both the safety of residents and the welfare of the dogs.
