Two years in prison

Former Babil municipalities director sentenced in absentia for corruption

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Federal Integrity Commission announced Thursday that Ahmed Mohsen Nasser, the former director of municipalities in Babylon governorate, has been sentenced in absentia to two years of high-security imprisonment for violating his official duties and causing damage to public funds.

In a statement, the commission said, “The Hilla Misdemeanor Court for Integrity Cases issued an in absentia verdict sentencing the fugitive former director of Babylon municipalities, Ahmed Mohsen Nasser, to two years of high-security imprisonment for deliberately violating his job duties.”

According to the commission, Nasser granted an exclusive investment opportunity on a state-owned property that was not listed in the investment map of the Ministry of Construction, Housing, Municipalities and Public Works. The commission said this was done without fulfilling the required criteria or complying with applicable regulations, for personal gain at the expense of public interest.

The statement added, “The court found the evidence—including complainant testimonies, regulatory and technical reports from the Integrity Commission, and statements from the legal representative of the affected parties—sufficient and convincing to convict the fugitive.”

The court ordered the seizure of Nasser’s movable and immovable assets. It also granted the complainants the right to pursue civil compensation once the verdict becomes final.
