Al-Sudani orders fast-tracking of Baghdad infrastructure projects
BAGHDAD – Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani directed the expedited completion of infrastructure projects in Baghdad and urged prompt decision-making for public service projects on Thursday. He ordered the implementation of six overpass projects by the Baghdad Municipality, three in Al-Rusafa and three in Al-Karkh, to alleviate traffic congestion.
In a meeting to review major infrastructural projects in Baghdad, Al-Sudani stressed government’s commitment to removing obstacles that delay project completion. “It is the responsibility of officials to simplify procedures and find solutions to problems in all sectors,” he stated, according to a statement from the prime minister’s office obtained by 964media.
The meeting also addressed equipment procurement, with Al-Sudani directing the formation of a committee led by the Mayor of Baghdad to procure equipment for the Baghdad Municipality. Discussions also covered the completion of infrastructure projects in New Sadr City and the monitoring of sewage projects in Al-Bu’itha, Al-Khansaa, and Qanat Al-Shurta areas. The expansion of water projects to meet population growth and future needs, including the Al-Rusafa water project to supply New Sadr City, was also discussed.
Despite the comprehensive review, the meeting did not specifically address electricity provision, a major concern for Iraqi citizens amid ongoing power outages during the country’s blistering heat. Citizens have protested in various parts of the country over the past few months, demanding better power supply.
Since assuming office in October 2022, Al-Sudani has prioritized public service projects, launching major initiatives across Baghdad and other governorates. This reconstruction campaign, following decades of neglect, has garnered popular support for the prime minister, who is reportedly planning to leverage this in the upcoming parliamentary elections by running on an independent ticket.
