Community festival strengthens bonds in Sulaymaniyah village

PSHDAR — Residents of Bawze Village, located in Sulaymaniyah’s Pshdar area, held a special outing on Friday to foster community ties and celebrate local traditions.

Originally scheduled for May 1, the event was postponed due to weather and the occurrence of a funeral, demonstrating the rural community’s deep respect for mourning practices, during which all festivities are traditionally paused.

Village festivals like the one in Bawze play a critical role in maintaining social and cultural links among residents, particularly important in rural areas where community bonds form the backbone of daily life.

Locals say these gatherings are not only a chance for current residents to socialize and engage in shared activities but also provide an opportunity for those who live outside the village, including expatriates, to reconnect with their roots.

“I am delighted by such a day where all relatives, friends, and acquaintances come together to share joy,” a participant told 964media.

The festival, held annually in an area called Gore Bawze, begins early in the morning and continues into the late night. It features an array of activities, including theatrical performances, poetry readings, quizzes for entertainment, and communal meals, culminating in a dance that is often the highlight of the day.
