Iraq PM Al-Sudani pushes for women’s rights at Higher Council meeting
BAGHDAD – Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani chaired the regular meeting of the Higher Council for Women’s Affairs on Thursday, emphasizing the importance of women’s rights and the implementation of previous decisions. The council discussed the actions of various ministries and entities related to women’s issues.
Al-Sudani urged immediate efforts to serve women’s interests and enhance their status in various fields. He stressed that women represent more than half of society but face many restrictions, necessitating the establishment of mechanisms to empower them. The prime minister also directed the consideration of the proportion of women receiving social assistance and taking necessary measures on this matter.
The council approved the launch of the “National Team for Iraqi Women” initiative, which aims to support and develop the skills of young women in social and economic fields through specialized training programs. Approximately 5,000 young women from all governorates will be selected via the National Team for Iraqi Women platform.
The council also approved the National Women’s Dialogue Forum to listen to women’s issues and needs in Baghdad and other governorates. Additionally, the “National Women’s Training Program” was approved to train women in the private sector in areas such as digital marketing, electronic payment, IT, AI, economic empowerment, management, marketing, and sales. The Iraqi-Arab Women’s Forum has been postponed to mid-November in Baghdad.
The council decided to invite the Chairwoman of the Parliamentary Committee on Women, Family, and Childhood, along with several judges, to discuss the Personal Status Law in the next session. A Ministry of Health representative will also be invited to address divorce rates and provide psychological support and counseling.
