A pioneer in Iraqi photography
Iraq’s ‘Sheikh of Photographers’ Muwahhid Saleh Al-Mohammadi passes away at 90
FALLUJAH – In Fallujah, Iraq’s oldest photographer, Hajj Muwahhid Saleh Al-Mohammadi, passed away at the age of 90 after battling the ailments of old age. Known affectionately as the “Sheikh of Photographers,” he had been a significant figure in the field in Iraq since 1954, capturing images of Iraq’s kings and prominent political figures.
“Sheikh of Photographers Muwahhid Al-Mohammadi, born in Fallujah in 1930, is considered a symbol of the city,” said Ahmed Mohammed, one of his students. “He taught many photographers in the [Anbar] governorate and other governorates the art of professional photography. He was generous with his knowledge and shared it with everyone, and he had a good reputation.”
Al-Mohammadi learned photography in Baghdad while serving as a soldier in Bab Al-Muadham. In 1951, he opened his first studio, “Dulaim Studio,” during the reign of King Faisal. Later, he established “Al-Ahram” studio in Fallujah. Among his most notable works were photographs of the Fallujah Bridge and pictures of Abdul Salam Arif and King Faisal II.
“The late photographer had been bedridden for 10 years and had suffered multiple strokes and heart attacks. His health deteriorated recently, and he passed away after a long struggle with old age diseases,” explained Ahmed Makhlif from Fallujah Hospital’s media department.
Al-Mohammadi also played a pivotal role in training young photographers in Anbar and other provinces, ensuring his legacy would continue through their work.
