Sulaymaniyah traffic directorate seizes vehicle with fake license plates, millions in fines

SULAYMANIYAH — Traffic police in Sulaymaniyah have arrested the driver of a vehicle with forged license plates who had also racked up over 6.3 million Iraqi dinars ($4,800) in multiple moving violations.

The Sulaymaniyah Traffic Directorate said on Tuesday that officers had impounded the vehicle and that the driver had engaged in reckless behavior, speeding through city streets and posing a risk to himself and others on the road.

“The vehicle associated with these infractions has accumulated a total of 58 violations over the past two years, 56 of which were related to speeding, leading to fines amounting to 6.31 million Iraqi dinars,”  the directorate’s statement said.

In addition to financial penalties, authorities are pursuing legal action against the unidentified driver for driving with fake plates and “other inappropriate behavior” documented by the authorities. Officials did not elaborate on the specific cause of the extra charges.

The directorate’s statement urged the public to comply with traffic laws and warned drivers against breaking the law, noting that severe penalties will be enforced for violations and forgery.
