Farmer looks to successes in Penjwen

Halabja farmer pioneers drone technology in local agriculture

HALABJA — A young farmer in Halabja is pioneering the use of drones in the region’s agriculture sector, marking the first such deployment in his area following successful use of the technology in another district.

Bilal Sheikh Raouf, an agricultural expert, confirmed to 964media that his drone, capable of carrying several kilograms of various farming materials, represents a novel application for Halabja. He pointed to neighboring Penjwen, where farmers have successfully utilized similar technology for the past three years, praising its effectiveness and convenience.

Sheikh Raouf said the drone offers different functionalities like targeted pesticide and herbicide spraying, precise seed sowing, and soil analysis, potentially leading to improved farm management and crop production.

Despite the proven success in Penjwen, widespread adoption across the Kurdistan Region’s agricultural sector remains limited due to the drone’s high cost and the requirement for security clearances from relevant authorities, according to Sheikh Raouf.
