First new hospital since 1978
New 100-bed hospital planned for Shekhan district
SHEKHAN — The Iraqi government has announced plans to construct a 100-bed hospital in the Shekhan district, with the district’s qaymaqam (or local commissioner), Sardar Yahya, awaiting the allocation of funds for the project.
Yahya shared with 964media that, “All design and master planning stages for the construction of the hospital have been completed, marking it as the second public hospital within the Shekhan’s boundaries.”
The hospital is set to be built on a 4.3 acre plot of land, with a budget of 76 billion Iraqi dinars ($5m) earmarked for the project. The Iraqi government is expected to fund the hospital according to Yahya.
“This project is among several others in the Shekhan planned for 2023 that have yet to be implemented,” he added.
Currently, aside from 34 health centers, the district has only one public hospital established back in 1978.
The district’s population, including 60,000 IDPs from Sinjar, totals approximately 210,000 people.
