Iraqi Red Crescent Society warns of fake donation campaigns for Gaza

BAGHDAD — The Iraqi Red Crescent Society has issued a public warning urging citizens to avoid fraudulent online pages falsely claiming to collect donations for Gaza in coordination with Rafidain Bank.

“These are fraudulent efforts by dishonest individuals exploiting public compassion,” the organization said in a statement. “We warn citizens against engaging with such schemes.”

The Red Crescent reaffirmed its commitment to humanitarian service and said it would pursue legal action against anyone impersonating the organization. “We will deal with individuals falsely claiming to represent the Iraqi Red Crescent through legal channels,” the statement read.

The organization directed the public to its official website for verified updates and donation information.

Iraq has actively supported Palestinians in Gaza through several humanitarian initiatives. The government has dispatched multiple aid shipments, including 11 tons of medical and relief supplies, to the Gaza Strip via Egypt’s El Arish Airport. It has also pledged to send 10 million liters of fuel to help alleviate the enclave’s energy crisis.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani previously announced plans to establish an Iraqi hospital in Gaza to provide medical services and reinforce Iraq’s support for the Palestinian cause.

In November 2024, the government launched a ‘voluntary’ initiative allowing state employees and retirees to donate 1% of their salaries, allowances, or pensions to humanitarian relief efforts in Gaza and Lebanon. Effective December 1, those funds were to be allocated equally between the two regions or distributed based on priorities set by the prime minister. Participants wishing to opt out were required to file formal requests with their respective ministries or agencies.
