Reckless driving

Truck driver faces legal charges after defying traffic patrol

BAGHDAD — Iraqi traffic authorities have taken legal action against a truck driver who blatantly ignored a stop command from a patrol, engaging in reckless driving that nearly triggered multiple accidents.

A widely circulated video on social media shows officers in pursuit on a busy highway, as the driver continued to accelerate, swerve erratically, and even attempted to block the patrol vehicle. Authorities confirmed that the driver had entered a restricted zone during prohibited hours, violating traffic regulations under Traffic Law No. 8 of 2019. Based on the compelling video evidence, a lawsuit has been filed.

Officials stressed that motorists must adhere to traffic laws and cooperate with enforcement officers to maintain road safety.

In a related development on July 25, 2024, the General Directorate of Traffic imposed a strict ban on trucks weighing over four tons from entering Baghdad between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. The regulation also prohibits these vehicles from stopping near the city’s entry checkpoints, except on official holidays and Fridays.

Exemptions are made for trucks transporting perishable food items, fuel tankers, and vehicles engaged in government projects, provided they hold proper authorization from the relevant agency. Violators will be subject to fines of 100,000 Iraqi dinars (approximately $67.57) under Article 25 of Traffic Law No. 8.
