Halabja farmers receive 40 tons of potatoes from WFP training program
HALABJA — The World Food Programme (WFP) has distributed 40 tons of potatoes to 10 farmers in the Halabja governorate.
Following three years of specialized training provided by the WFP, this distribution serves as the culmination of efforts aimed at improving farming techniques and increasing productivity.
Star Mahmoud, Halabja’s Director of Agriculture, told 964media that each participating farmer received over 4.1 tonnes of potatoes.
Mahmoud emphasized the significant market value of these potatoes, which can fetch up to $1,800 per ton.
This initiative benefits farmers by supplying a valuable resource and offering a financial edge over the market cost of similar quality potatoes.
Over the last three years, the WFP’s training program has addressed various facets of potato cultivation and management, including planting techniques and maximizing harvests, with a particular emphasis on producing chips and other potato-based products.
The Ministry of Agriculture reports that the region hosts 11 chip and fry production factories, with an annual potato demand exceeding 250,000 tons, predominantly sourced locally.
Halabja dedicates around 74 acres of land annually to potato farming. Last year, the Kurdistan Region produced 600,000 tons of potatoes, with local consumption accounting for about 130,000 tons. The excess supports the chips and finger production industry and exports.
