Iraq inks agreement for internet capacity via undersea cables

BAGHDAD – An international agreement was signed today, under the patronage of Minister of Communications, Hiyam Al-Yasiri, between the Iraqi Public Telecommunications Company and GCX, a global communications company. This agreement paves the way for the passage of internet capacities through Iraq via the Falcon submarine cable.

In a statement released by the ministry, they highlighted, “On the sidelines of the Capacity Middle East Conference held in Dubai, a cooperation agreement was signed in the presence and under the sponsorship of Her Excellency the Minister of Communications, Dr. Hayam Al-Yasiri. The agreement aims to facilitate international transit traffic through Iraq via the Falcon Submarine Cable, which connects to Faw.”

Grand Faw Port is an large port infrastructure project in Basra that seeks to boost Iraq’s trade volume and oil and gas capacity.
