Ministry of finance allocates funds for weapons buybacks across Iraqi governorates

BAGHDAD, January 24 – Iraq’s Ministry of Finance said on Tuesday it would allocate one billion dinars for each governorate outside of the Kurdistan Region to fund weapons buybacks from citizens across the country. Totaling 15 billion dinars, the funds would come from the government’s emergency reserves.

A statement from the ministry said:

The Ministry of Finance has allocated one billion dinars for each governorate, except for the governorates of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, totaling 15 billion dinars from the emergency reserve. This is in accordance with provisions in the General Budget Law for three fiscal years. The allocation is intended for the direct purchase of weapons from citizens, as part of the government’s agenda and the first phase of the national policy to regulate and centralize weapons in the hands of the state (the phase of registering citizens’ weapons).
