Iraqi government declares one-day national mourning for Iranian president

BAGHDAD – Following the deaths of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and several top-ranking officials, the Iraqi government has declared a national day of mourning for Tuesday.

Government spokesperson Basim Al-Awadi announced, “In solidarity with the brotherly Iranian people and their leadership in these difficult times, and sharing in the sorrow and pain, the Iraqi government declares a national day of mourning across Iraq.”

The national mourning will be observed across Iraq on Tuesday.

A helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan province, Iran, on Monday resulted in the deaths of President Raisi, Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian, Ayatollah Al-Hashem, the Imam of Tabriz, the Governor of East Azerbaijan, the flight crew, and other companions.

“We pray to Almighty God to grant patience and solace to the families of the victims, the Iranian people, and their leadership.”

Early this morning, top Iraqi leaders, including the president of the republic, the prime Mminister, and the president of the Kurdistan Region, expressed their condolences for the death of the Iranian president and his companions.
