Attacks reported early Monday before polls opened
Multiple election centers in Najaf targeted with sound grenades and gunfire
NAJAF, December 18 — A number of election centers were targeted by homemade sound grenades across Najaf early Monday, as officials prepared for polling stations to open for the country’s provincial council elections.
The targeted areas included the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) headquarters in Najaf, located in the Al-Prince neighborhood. The sound of grenades was reportedly followed by gunfire from unidentified assailants. Police immediately cordoned off the area.
Simultaneously, two polling centers in Al-Kufa district were attacked in a similar manner. The targeted polling stations there were the Al-Aqeela School and the Tal Al-Zaatar School.
Security sources said no injuries were reported.
