Two municipal workers die after inhaling toxic gas at Salah al-Din sewage project

SALAH AL-DIN — Two municipal workers died and three others were hospitalized in unstable condition on Wednesday after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a sewage channel in al-Dour district, local officials said.

Mustafa Amin, a medical staff member at al-Dour General Hospital, told 964media that five workers were brought to the emergency department suffering breathing difficulties after inhaling toxic gas inside the sewage project. “Despite extensive efforts and initial treatment, two of the workers died, and the other three are currently under intensive monitoring,” he said.

A police source told 964media that preliminary investigations indicate the workers were operating at a deep level without safety measures such as masks or oxygen equipment. Criminal evidence and civil defense teams arrived at the scene, and authorities have opened an investigation into potential negligence by the executing company.

Families of the victims have called for accountability, with the incident raising concerns about worker protection and occupational safety standards in service projects.
