World leaders congratulate Nizar Amedi on election as Iraq’s new president
BAGHDAD — International leaders extended congratulations to Nizar Amedi on Saturday following his election as Iraq’s president, with messages arriving from Russia, Iran, France, Oman and the Arab Parliament.
French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized “the importance of Iraq’s stability and security” and reaffirmed France’s support. Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq expressed hope Amedi would succeed in achieving “the aspirations of Iraqis toward further progress and prosperity” and affirmed Oman’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
Russian President Vladimir Putin wished Amedi success and expressed hope his efforts would “enhance the friendly and historical relations between Iraq and Russia.”
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the election “reflects the confidence of the Council of Representatives and the Iraqi people in his competence,” pointing to “deep-rooted historical, cultural and religious ties” between the two countries as a foundation for deeper strategic cooperation.
Arab Parliament Speaker Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi praised Amedi’s election, citing his “large level of support” as a reflection of national consensus and political will backing stability and state-building efforts. He said the constitutional step represents progress toward strengthening state institutions and wished Amedi success in meeting the aspirations of Iraqis.
Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq conveyed his congratulations and best wishes, expressing hope that Amedi would succeed in achieving “the aspirations of Iraqis toward further progress and prosperity.”
Amedi was elected in a second round of parliamentary voting, securing 227 votes against 15 for rival Muthanna Amin, with the Kurdistan Democratic Party boycotting the session. Prime Minister Sudani called the election “an important step” in Iraq’s democratic process and said forming a new government is the next priority. Under Article 76 of the constitution, Amedi must task the nominee of the largest parliamentary bloc with forming a government within 15 days.
