A 'first-of-its-kind project' for Basra

ExxonMobil-funded football stadium and sports project in Basra nearly completed

BASRA, November 13 — Local officials in Basra’s Al-Midaina district have announced that a football stadium and sports forum project funded by ExxonMobil company has reached 85 percent completion.

The city’s mayor, Rafid Al-Shawi, told 964:

The project is part of the social benefits provided by ExxonMobil for the year 2022, operating in the West Qurna 1 oil field, and it is the first of its kind in the youth and sports sector.

The project consists of two main parts: the first is a stadium with a capacity of 500 spectators, and the second part is a two-story youth and sports forum.

The executing entity is the Sada Al-Amran Company, and the completion rate has reached 85 percent. It is expected that the project will be completed at the beginning of 2024.

ExxonMobil said it would exit the field and sell its remaining shares in West Qurna 1 via letter to the Iraq Oil Report outlet, which reported the story on November 10.
