Two women killed in car crash with water tanker

KIRKUK — Two women were killed Monday when their car collided with a municipal water tanker on the Backstreet Road in Kirkuk, eyewitnesses told 964media.

Ahmed Izzedin, who witnessed the crash, said, “[A] car collided with a municipal water tanker that was watering trees and plants between the road lanes.”

He said the driver and passenger, both residents of the Shorawi neighborhood, died instantly at the scene. “The car was speeding, and the driver lost control before hitting the tanker,” Izzedin added.

The bodies were transferred to the Kirkuk Forensic Medicine Department for examination.

According to the Ministry of Planning, Iraq recorded 11,763 traffic accidents outside the Kurdistan Region in 2024, including 2,103 fatal crashes that killed 2,719 people. The figure represents a 10% drop from 2023. Men accounted for 82% of the fatalities.
