Water levels drop at Bestansur, prompting concern for Sharazur residents

SHARAZUR — Water levels at the Bestansur source in Sulaymaniyah’s Sharazur district have declined sharply, raising concerns about potential depletion. The source provides drinking water to residents of Sharazur, as well as the subdistricts of Zrayan, Arbat, and surrounding areas.

Ramazan Aref, an official from the Sharazur Water Directorate, said Bestansur supports two main water projects — one supplying Arbat and Zrayan, and another serving Sharazur district. He said the first project is currently operating at only 20% of its usual capacity, and the second at 60%.

“In previous years, this decline occurred in August, but this year it’s already happening in May, which increases the risk of depletion,” Aref told 964media.

He said Bestansur is considered the second-largest source of drinking water in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, after the Dukan water project, and serves more than 200,000 people. Aref added that a joint committee is being formed with the district administration to monitor usage and prevent waste.
