PM Al-Sudani meets Gulf press union delegation to boost cultural ties

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met Sunday with a delegation from the Gulf Press Union, joined by journalists and artists from Gulf countries. In a statement from his media office, Al-Sudani stressed the importance of media, arts, and sports in “strengthening ties and fostering connections between nations.”

The prime minister also underscored the need for “responsibility and objectivity” in reporting, emphasizing that the media should “convey an accurate portrayal of events and issues.”

The Gulf Press Union was established after a preparatory meeting in Manama, Bahrain, in January 2024 with the goal of advancing Gulf journalism.

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met today, Sunday, a delegation from the Gulf Press Union, in the presence of a number of journalists and artists from Gulf countries.

The Prime Minister listened to the delegation members’ insights and perceptions regarding Iraq’s ongoing development and reconstruction efforts. He highlighted the role of media, arts, and sports in strengthening ties and fostering connections between nations, emphasizing their vital impact on communication. He also highlighted the success of the Gulf Cup 25 hosted in Basra, which reflected unity, fraternity, and engagement among the participating nations.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani underscored the importance of media in conveying an accurate portrayal of events and issues of interest to the Arab public, stressing the need for responsibility and objectivity—free from distortion that serves some agendas. He noted that media plays a crucial role in shaping modern societies, contributing to their development and progress.

The delegation members, in turn, expressed their appreciation for the government’s support and commitment to the media and cultural sectors in Iraq. They also extended their gratitude for the warm reception they received during their visit.
