Iraq calls for stability in Syria as Al-Assad regime crumbles

BAGHDAD — The Iraqi government issued a statement on Sunday addressing the unfolding situation in Syria following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad, emphasizing the importance of stability, respect for Syrian sovereignty, and inclusive dialogue for the future of the nation.

“The Iraqi government is closely monitoring developments in Syria and continues international communications with friendly and brotherly nations to support efforts for stability, security, and the protection of lives and property for the Syrian people,” government spokesperson Basem Al-Awadi said.

Iraq underscored the need to respect the free will of all Syrians, “the security and unity of Syria are not only vital for Iraq but are also intrinsically linked to the stability of the region,” the statement added.

The government reaffirmed its support for regional and international initiatives aimed at fostering dialogue that includes all Syrian factions and perspectives. “Iraq supports efforts to establish a pluralistic constitution that preserves the civil and human rights of Syrians, while celebrating Syria’s rich cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity. This diversity is a source of strength for Syria and must be preserved without compromise.”

The statement also warned against foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs. “We stress the importance of non-interference in Syria’s domestic matters or supporting one faction over another. Such actions will only deepen the conflict and division, ultimately harming the Syrian people, who have already endured immense suffering. Iraq stands firmly against such outcomes for a brotherly, independent, and sovereign nation with deep ties to the Iraqi people.”

At the onset of the recent rebel offensive in Syria, the Iraqi government expressed support for President Bashar Al-Assad’s regime.

Iraq took measures to bolster border security, deploying troops along its frontier with Syria to prevent any spillover of the conflict. Al-Sudani emphasized that Iraq would not remain a “spectator” amid the escalating situation, highlighting concerns over regional stability and the potential for ethnic cleansing.

Despite these actions, the Iraqi government refrained from direct military involvement in Syria. Al-Sudani’s administration avoided deploying Iraqi forces into Syria territory, focusing instead on diplomatic efforts and internal security measures to address the crisis.
