Palm farmers begin winter pruning season in Maysan

MAYSAN — Palm orchard owners in Maysan have begun preparations for the upcoming date harvest season, as winter marks the ideal time for “takreeb”, the pruning and cleaning of palm trees. With cooler temperatures reducing insect activity and rainfall providing necessary moisture, workers find the season optimal for this essential agricultural task.

The cost of takreeb is determined by the size and condition of the palm tree, ranging from 4,000 to 10,000 IQD ($3 to $7) per tree. Smoother palms are easier and quicker to clean, while rougher, older trees require more effort and sturdier tools.

Many workers, like Ali Fadel, prefer traditional tools such as knives over electric saws due to safety concerns and the added requirement of generators and fuel for electric tools.

“We start our work early in the morning, around 7 a.m., and continue until 3 p.m. Winter makes the palms moist from the rain, which makes pruning easier and more efficient,” Fadel told 964media.

According to orchard owner Abu Abbas Al-Abadi, the winter season is the preferred period for pruning palm trees.

“Insects are dormant during this season, and the cold weather keeps the workers comfortable. Pruned palms are easier to climb and harvest during the date-picking season. Additionally, removing offshoots helps the palm tree grow better and produce higher yields,” Al-Abadi explained.

Palm pruning is not only about cleaning the tree but also about ensuring long-term productivity and health. Proper pruning removes old fronds and supports the tree’s overall growth, directly contributing to the quality and quantity of the date harvest.
