Iraqi PM Al-Sudani, UK home secretary discuss security cooperation in London meeting

NEWSROOM — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met with UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper in London on Wednesday to discuss joint security efforts. The talks focused on  collaboration in combating organized crime, sharing intelligence, and improving security force capabilities, according a statement from PM Al-Sudani’s media office.

“Security cooperation and coordination between the two countries would follow a clear path within the framework of the Iraq-UK agreement,” the statement read.

The meeting builds on agreements made during Cooper’s visit to Baghdad last year. Last November, Iraq’s Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari and his British counterpart Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, signed a security cooperation agreement to bolster joint efforts in combating drug trafficking and transnational crime.

During her November visit, Cooper also met Iraqi Prime Minister Al-Sudani, discussing enhancing bilateral relations, with a focus on security cooperation.

Al-Sudani arrived in the United Kingdom on Monday to engage with officials and business leaders, highlighting discussions on economic collaboration, investment prospects, and security partnerships.

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met today with the United Kingdom’s Home Secretary, Ms. Yvette Cooper, at his residence in London.

The meeting focused on exploring avenues for joint security cooperation, including the exchange of expertise and enhancing the capabilities of security forces in combating organized crime. Discussions also emphasized collaboration in intelligence and information-sharing, building on the agreements established during Ms. Cooper’s visit to Baghdad last year.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani underscored that security cooperation and coordination between the two countries would follow a clear path within the framework of the Iraq-UK agreement, paving the way for addressing critical challenges of mutual interest.
