Suspects confess
Two arrested for stealing electrical transformer in rural Halabja village
HALABJA — Authorities in Halabja Governorate have arrested two individuals accused of stealing an electrical transformer in the village of Darashishi Khwaru, according to a statement from the Halabja Police Directorate.
“After receiving a report from a local resident regarding the theft of a transformer in Darashishi Khwaru, the Crime Prevention Police launched an investigation,” the statement read. “The swift actions of the unit led to the identification and arrest of the suspects.”
The suspects, 32 and 24, both residents of Halabja Governorate, were apprehended following judicial authorization. The police confirmed that the suspects confessed to their crime during the investigation and remain in custody awaiting legal proceedings.
The Halabja Police Directorate expressed its appreciation to the Sharazur Security Directorate for their cooperation in the case.
Transformer thefts are often driven by the high value of copper and other metals inside the equipment, which can be sold on the black market or to scrap dealers. These crimes can lead to widespread power outages and significant repair costs, with rural or isolated areas being particularly vulnerable due to lower levels of security.
