Ammar Al-Hakim: ‘Today, Iraq is more secure than neighboring countries’

NINEVEH – Ammar Al-Hakim, head of the Hikma Movement, has described the governorate as a reflection of Iraq’s diversity, calling it “an Iraqi bouquet encompassing all the ethnicities, religions, and communities living within it.”

Speaking at a press conference following a meeting with Nineveh Governor Abdulqader Al-Dakhil and security officials on Wednesday, Al-Hakim noted “progress” in the governorate, stating, “I found Nineveh in a better state in terms of reconstruction and security.”

On regional matters, Al-Hakim emphasized Iraq’s “stability” compared to neighboring countries, saying, “We wish safety and stability for the brotherly people of Syria.”

Excerpts from Ammar Al-Hakim’s press conference:

Nineveh represents a miniature Iraq and is an Iraqi bouquet encompassing all the ethnicities, religions, and communities living within it.

The reconstruction movement is progressing rapidly, and the city stands as a model of security compared to other Iraqi cities.

We are here to honor all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the city [from Islamic State militants] and to salute the people of Nineveh. This visit is a gesture of appreciation and respect for its residents.

We have many issues that need to be resolved, including the issue of the internally displaced individuals, ensuring people return to their areas, and guaranteeing that citizens feel secure and stable.

We recall the fatwa of Imam Al-Sistani, who called on Iraqis to fight ISIS and liberate the city.

Local governments must be granted adequate authority after the formation of provincial councils. There are effective laws to support these councils, and we will work to grant powers to make governance more flexible.

Unity and solidarity are the means to overcome this phase in light of what is happening in the region. Today, Iraq is more secure than neighboring countries, and we wish safety and stability for the brotherly people of Syria.

We pray to God that Syria will have a better future, but we must remain cautious about any changes that may occur in the future, even though Iraq will never be affected by the conditions in neighboring countries.

This is our second visit to Nineveh, and I have found it in a better state in terms of reconstruction and security. It is receiving great attention from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and all the ministers who visit it regularly.
