Aerial surveys uncover potential ancient civilization in Anbar desert

ANBAR — The Board of Antiquities and Heritage in Anbar province announced the discovery of a significant archaeological site in the remote desert area of Hamrat al-Aleja Hill on Thursday. Using aerial maps and modern photography, experts believe the site may contain remnants of an ancient civilization.

Ammar Ali Hamdi, Anbar’s Inspector of Antiquities and Heritage, told Iraqi News Agency, “This discovery marks an important step forward, as the site has been documented with precision, and it opens up possibilities for uncovering hidden civilizations in the area.”

The board’s efforts to explore previously uncharted historical sites in the Anbar desert are ongoing, though excavation work has yet to begin. Further details about the site remain unknown.
