Erbil police arrest suspects after women and girls targeted social media charity scam

ERBIL — Police in Erbil have arrested a group accused of hacking social media accounts belonging to more than 10 women by offering false promises of charity donations, according to the Directorate for Combating Violence Against Women and Families.

The suspects allegedly posed as a charity organization, claiming to offer “25 million dinars (around $16,900) and 100 iPhones” to those in need. Using a fake Facebook and Snapchat page, they contacted women and tricked them into revealing personal information.

“This happened two days ago through a fake charity page,” the directorate said in a statement. Investigators found that the scammers sent victims a link asking them to register for the supposed donations. Once the women followed the instructions, their accounts were hacked.

Authorities cautioned the public, particularly women and girls, against falling for similar schemes. “Be alert and protect your personal data from scammers and predators who may later use it for blackmail or threats,” the directorate said.
