Suspects in attack on former MP Haider al-Mulla’s office turn themselves in, authorities say

BAGHDAD — Security forces in Baghdad said Tuesday that suspects involved in an attack on the office of former Iraqi MP Haider Al-Mulla have surrendered to authorities and are now facing legal action.

Baghdad Operations Command said the incident took place at 9:55 p.m. on March 31 in the Amiriya area of western Baghdad. According to the statement, the assailants arrived in Chevrolet Tahoe vehicles and damaged the office, broke windows, and stole the surveillance system’s recorder before fleeing.

A joint force from local police units and intelligence services responded to the scene, the command said, adding that investigations quickly led to identifying and tracking the suspects. They later turned themselves in at the Mansour Criminal Investigation Directorate.

Legal proceedings are now underway, authorities said.

The attack came as screenshots from an unverified WhatsApp group chat circulated online, appearing to show a dispute among Sunni political figures, including Al-Mulla and former speaker of parliament Mohammed Al-Halbousi. The messages have not been independently verified.

Al-Mulla served in parliament from 2010 to 2014 and remains an active Sunni political figure.
