Iraqi, Syrian leaders hold first call, pledge cooperation on security and border control
BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and newly appointed Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara’ held their first phone call Tuesday, exchanging Eid al-Fitr greetings and committing to strengthen bilateral cooperation on regional security, economic ties, and border management.
According to a statement from the Iraqi prime minister’s office, Al-Sudani congratulated the Syrian people on the formation of a new government and reaffirmed Iraq’s support for Syria’s sovereignty.
“Iraq rejects the Zionist entity’s incursions into Syrian territory,” the statement said, adding that Baghdad supports “the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Syria” and opposes “all foreign interventions.”
Al-Sudani also emphasized the need for a political process that includes all components of Syrian society and promotes peaceful coexistence and long-term stability.
In a separate statement, the Syrian presidency described the call as an opportunity to “open a new chapter in bilateral relations based on joint cooperation to confront regional challenges and prevent tensions in the region.”
The statement confirmed discussions on border security and anti-narcotics efforts, with both leaders stressing the importance of improving coordination to prevent threats that could undermine stability.

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani exchanged Eid al-Fitr greetings with the President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Mr. Ahmed Al-Shara’.
During the phone call, Prime Minister Al-Sudani extended his congratulations and best wishes to the Syrian people on the formation of the new government, reaffirming Iraq’s steadfast position in support of the choices of the brotherly Syrian people. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the political process includes all national components of Syrian society, and that it moves toward peaceful coexistence and social stability—for a secure and stable future for Syria and the region as a whole.
The Prime Minister also reiterated Iraq’s rejection of the Zionist entity’s incursions into Syrian territory, and affirmed Iraq’s support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Syria, as well as its rejection of all foreign interventions. He also emphasized the importance of mutual cooperation in combating the threat of ISIS, in addition to strengthening economic collaboration given the shared opportunities and common factors between the two countries.
