Drug bust in Baghdad sees eight suspects arrested

BAGHDAD – Security forces detained eight suspected drug dealers Friday in a series of raids across Baghdad, according to the Baghdad Intelligence and Security Directorate.

The suspects were apprehended “red-handed while promoting and dealing in narcotics,” the Ministry of Defense stated. The operations resulted in the confiscation of various narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and light weaponry. Authorities have processed the suspects legally and referred them for trial.

A recent United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime report highlights a significant increase in drug seizures in Iraq. In 2023, methamphetamine confiscations surged nearly sixfold compared to 2019, while seizures of Captagon, a potent stimulant, tripled from the previous year. The total drugs seized in 2023 were 34 times greater than those in 2019, indicating both a rise in drug trafficking through the region and enhanced counter-narcotics efforts by Iraqi and international forces.

The report also notes the challenges in assessing drug trafficking trends within Iraq, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict against the Islamic State of Iraq, which has diverted resources from counter-narcotics operations.

“The Ministry of Defense pledges to the Iraqi people that it will be the secure wall to protect the homeland and the sword that cuts off the arms of terrorism and eradicates the scourge of drugs,” the ministry declared
